2020 WALK STAR: RON DUNCAN
‘’Mr. Duncan, What's wrong with you?’ These were the first words Ron heard on his journey with Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA).
Ron was diagnosed in 2005 when a routine blood donation went awry. The young woman testing his hemoglobin level had never seen one at 7.8 and called the head doctor who explained that they usually didn’t take blood at that level and sent him to his local doctor.
After seeing several specialists Ron was called at work and sent for a bone marrow biopsy and three units of blood. After two biopsies the third was sent to a medical school where the pathologists determined he had PRCA. PRCA is exceptionally rare, and his first hematologist was overwhelmed. She directed Ron to another specialist who explained what PRCA was and told him not to come back to him!
Ron’s treatment changed to cyclosporine, prednisone and surgeries for other medical issues. In early 2008 he discovered a project to study PRCA patients for five years. When he called, he was referred to AAMDS for the first time. In turn, Leigh Clark referred him to Dr. Maciejewski in Cleveland for the study. For the first time Ron felt that things were headed in the right direction. Under Dr. Maciejewski care for 10 years, Ron has been off all drugs since 2015 and has helped with M4M Texas since 2011.
REMEMBER, HONOR & CELEBRATE BOARD
Ever since we were founded, patients and family members have created incredible posters celebrating their journey with bone marrow failure diseases. Los Angeles volunteer, Candy Stoutenborough, formalized this process with the creation of our Remember, Honor & Celebrate Board. She invested vast amounts of time collecting stickers, jewels, pithy sayings and colored pens and paper for people to create their own posters and 4Imprint donated a portable board. We invite you to bring your poster, letter and favorite photos to decorate the Board on March 28th – or come prepared to make your own on site. We still have a lot of supplies thanks to Candy’s thoughtfulness and dedication and 4Imprint's generosity!
Our thanks to these supporters who help the March for Marrow possible and ultimately make a difference in patients' lives.
Please join us at Rob Fleming Park on Saturday, March 28th to register and participate in the 2020 March for Marrow.
