2023 WALK STAR: Addie Dolson
Addie was your typical loving, playful child growing up. She was never ill, nor did she have any complications at birth. Our lives were wonderful until December 23, 2018, when I first notice Addie multiple bruises on her shins. At first, I didn’t think anything of it; I just thought she had been playing roughly. Later that night I notice she got small red dots all over her body known as petechias and we rushed her straight to Texas Children’s Hospital in The Woodlands. Once there they did bloodwork, and her counts were low, They thought that she might have Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP).
The hospital told us to take her back home and make an appointment for the following week but once we got home Addie just wasn’t acting herself. I notice she was tired and didn’t want to do much of anything. The next day, on Christmas Eve, I checked Addie’s temperature, and it was 106. Immediately, we took her back to Texas Children’s where she was admitted and given multiple transfusions. When the results of her blood tests and bone marrow biopsy came back in January of 2019, Addie was diagnosed with aplastic anemia.
Addie’s first transplant was March 22, 2019. We thought everything was going to be okay until it wasn’t. She went into failure and again and needed another transplant. Of course, we didn’t hesitate and on February 6, 2020, she had her second transplant. We knew this one was going to be the one - everything was going to be wonderful, and life would be back to normal.
But then, again, two years after her second transplant, she started bruising again. Addie would need a third transplant. We were heartbroken. On June 26, 2022, #AddieStrong had her third transplant, and we are praying that this is the last one ever! We see the sunshine in her eyes and pray it never goes away and that she never has to endure the pain she has suffered through again.
