VOLUNTEER
The success of this event depends on our volunteers. Our greatest need is help with social media and promotions. Our second greatest need is recruitment of exciting items for our raffle, each with a value of at least $50 and selling our raffle tickets. Our third greatest need is getting the word out with our fliers, our race cards and posters!

2022 WALK STAR: Ron Duncan
‘’Mr. Duncan, What's wrong with you?’ These were the first words I heard on my journey with Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA).” says Ron.
Ron was diagnosed in 2005 when a routine blood donation went awry. The young woman testing his hemoglobin level had never seen one at 7.8 and called the head doctor who explained that they usually didn’t take blood at that level – they gave it - and sent him back to his doctor.
After seeing several doctors Ron was called at work and sent for a bone marrow biopsy and three units of blood. After two biopsies the third was sent to a medical school where the pathologists determined he had PRCA. With PRCA the bone marrow makes platelets and white cells but doesn't make the red cells that carry hemoglobin. It is exceptionally rare, and his first hematologist was overwhelmed. She sent Ron to another doctor who explained what PRCA was and told him not to come back to him.
His treatment changed to cyclosporine, prednisone, Danazol, and surgeries for other medical issues. In early 2008 he discovered a project to study PRCA patients for five years. When he called, he was referred to AAMDS for the first time. Leigh Clark referred him to Dr. Maciejewski in Cleveland for the study. For the first time Ron felt that things were headed in the right direction. Ron has been off all drugs in 2015.
In the meantime, he attends annual patient conferences and tries to keep up to date on various treatments and advances. He also started a Facebook group for PRCA patients that now has 328 members from around the world who exchange their experiences that can be relayed to their doctors. Many have now gone to Dr. Maciejewski to be treated and to add their cases to his studies. Ron feels that this group allows these PRCA patients to feel that they are not alone, and that is what really helps.
He has become a member of the AAMDS Patient Education Council.
