The Foundation’s strength stems from the multi-faceted community it developed over 30+ years. AAMDSIF serves and educates the patient population and health professionals and provides financial support to clinical researchers searching for better treatments and cures.
For 13 consecutive years, AAMDSIF has earned a coveted 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the highest rating awarded by America’s largest independent charity evaluator. 2019 WALK STAR: MICHELLE SILLENCE
Michelle Sillence experienced months of fatigue, bruising and low blood counts before she was finally diagnosed in May 1999, at age 21, with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS, raebt, refractive anemia, excess blast, in transformation). She was treated with induction chemo at North Shore LIJ in Manhasset NY.
In October 1999 she had experimental chemotherapy, radiation and an unrelated bone marrow transplant at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle WA. At the time of her diagnosis and transplant she was given a 1 in 4 chance of survival.
Michelle says that for years she participated in various cancer related events, but never really had the opportunity to participate in an organization that was specific to her bone marrow failure disease. Three years ago, Michelle became part of the March for Marrow family after meeting Ron Porter, our 2018 Star. On October 7, 2018, she was blessed to celebrate her 19th “birthaversary”! Now we are blessed to have her and her husband, Adam, on our Team.
