About the Symposium
The AAMDSIF Bone Marrow Failure Symposium - Disease Updates and Health Equity will provide updates on the most recent advances in pathophysiology, diagnosis and clinical management of bone marrow failure diseases, including aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), secondary acute myeloid leukemia (AML), inherited bone marrow failure, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Additionally, the program will address current gaps in patient care for these diseases, including:
- Diversifying clinical trial enrollment
- Addressing barriers to care – ageism, geographic and cultural challenges, delays in diagnosis, limited English proficiency, financial toxicity, and long term supportive care
- Assessing quality of life issues and shared decision-making
Educational Design and Learning Objectives
The educational design of the Symposium will be oral didactic presentations and panel discussions, followed by Q & A. The American Board of Medical Specialties core competencies most related to intended learner outcomes of this educational activity include:
- Patient Care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.
- Medical Knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical and cognate (e.g. epidemiological and social-behavioral) sciences and the application of this knowledge to patient care.
- Interpersonal and Communication Skills, by helping the learner establish the ability to provide education and counseling to patients, their families, and colleagues.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Provide accurate differential diagnosis of bone marrow failure diseases, including myelodysplastic syndromes, secondary acute myeloid leukemia, aplastic anemia, and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria
- Summarize recent progress in understanding the pathogenesis of bone marrow failure diseases
- Identify current therapeutic standards for bone marrow failure diseases, as well as new and emerging therapies used in hematopoietic cell transplantation
- Assess underserved patient populations and patient needs to improve outcomes for bone marrow failure patients
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This program is intended for physicians, APPs, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and others who provide care for patients with bone marrow failure conditions.
Registration is open to healthcare professionals treating patients living with aplastic anemia, MDS, PNH, and associated diseases such as AML and MPN. Employees, consultants, or vendors of pharmaceutical or biotech companies working in these disease states may only register if their company is a sponsor.
